WHAT WE DO
Southwood Holographics is a holography center located in the Hudson Valley. We are focused on the production of holograms, education in holography, and the pursuit of new holographic technologies. We produce large and small scale holograms for artists and commercial clients, and offer educational opportunities for individuals and groups through online, hybrid, and in-person workshops.
CREATING HOLOGRAMS AT SOUTHWOOD
Southwood Holographics is one of the few fully operating holography studios (optics & darkroom) in the world that has been designed for creating all types of holographic images, rather than for commercial applications (such as anti-counterfeiting holography). The beautiful rural setting is optimal for the vibration free environment required for the process of creating both analogue and digital holograms as well.
We have two studios – the HIT Lab and the HAD Lab – that each contain several optical systems, a variety of gas and diode lasers, and set-ups for producing many different types of holograms. "HIT" stands for “Holography Isolation Table” lab, and “HAD” stands for “Holography Analog Digital” lab. We also have a darkroom and film lamination station.
HIT Lab
The HIT Lab contains a 4' x 8', 1000 lbs optics table for recording holograms. This stable system, which is isolated from vibrations which can interfere with a hologram recording, holds optical components arranged for creating different types of holograms. This system has all of the optics required for making many different types of holograms. The table is generally used for analog recordings but digital recordings can also be created on this system.
The HIT Lab is designed to produce holograms up to 12"x16" in size, and can be used for creating the following types of holograms:
● Laser Transmission Holograms
● Laser Transmission Master Holograms
● White Light Viewable Reflection and Transmission Holograms
HAD Lab
The HAD Lab is dedicated to exploring new and innovative ways to incorporate digital and alternative imaging formats like video, film, and photography into hybrid holography processes. We continually strive towards creating innovative systems and encourage this type of experimentation and inquiry for those interested in proposing projects at our facility. We are proud to house vintage and one-of-a-kind equipment and systems at our facility, such as Lloyd Cross’s “multiplex” system which was a groundbreaking innovation in holography and allowed for holograms to be recorded from moving images on film. Multiplex holograms are also referred to as stereograms. The multiplex system in our facility was built by our owner Hart Perry, Lloyd Cross, and holographers Bill Moltini and Rudie Berkhout.
